OUR STANDARDS

The substances we refuse to formulate with.

The following substances are restricted or prohibited in every Mazi Beauty product. Each is excluded because of evidence — or strong reasonable suspicion — of harm to skin, health, or the environment.

RESTRICTED OR PROHIBITED

Ingredients we never use.

Aluminium powder
Elemental aluminium (powder) is the third most abundant element on earth. At high doses it is a toxicant, and is never used in our products.
Animal-derived ingredients
We never use animal musks or animal fats. Animal-derived ingredients are prohibited, with these exceptions only: cholesterol, lactose, lanolin, and keratin.
Benzalkonium chloride
Bisphenol A (BPA)
Butoxyethanol
Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)
A preservative linked to cancer, skin irritation, and hormone disruption.
Camphor (>3%)
Chemical sunscreens
Some chemical sunscreens have been linked to hormone disruption. Mazi prohibits all chemical sunscreens, including (but not limited to): oxybenzone / benzophenone-3, avobenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, and octocrylene.
Coal tar
Ethanolamines (DEA / TEA / MEA / ETA)
EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid)
Calcium disodium EDTA, tetrasodium EDTA, trisodium EDTA, etc. are chelating agents. These ingredients are not linked to consumer health issues, but they may be problematic for aquatic life.
Formaldehydes
Although rarely listed as an ingredient itself, formaldehyde 'releasers' or 'donors' often are — including tosylamide/formaldehyde resin, methylene glycol, paraformaldehyde, polyoxymethylene urea, methenamine, benzylhemiformal, and quaternium-15.
Hydroquinone
Typically used as a skin-lightening agent — inhibits melanin synthesis, causes skin irritation, and may cause discolouration.
Isothiazolinones (all)
Mercury and mercury compounds
Methyl cellosolve (2-methoxyethanol)
Banned in the EU. A solvent used as an additive in perfumes; can cause skin irritation.
Petrolatum and paraffin
Petrolatum is a semisolid mixture derived from processed petroleum. Concerns include unsustainable sourcing and possible PAH contamination.
Nanoparticles
Including titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, silver, fullerenes, silica, carbon black, and quartz.
Parabens
Including butylparaben, benzylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben, isopropylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben.
PEGs
Allowed only if tested for 1,4-dioxane with statement and/or test data.
PFAS (including PTFE)
Phthalates
Plasticising chemicals. Some appear on ingredient labels, but many remain undisclosed under the umbrella term 'fragrance.'
Phenoxyethanol (>1%)
Despite being a 'controversial' ingredient, phenoxyethanol has a similar — or better — safety profile compared to other widely used preservatives. The SCCS considers 2-phenoxyethanol safe at a maximum concentration of 1.0%.
Plastic microbeads
Polyacrylamide and acrylamide
Propylene glycol (>0.1%)
Quaternary amine compounds (as preservatives)
Excluding: hydroxypropyl guar, hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, and cocodimopropryl quar hydroxysultaine.
Resorcinol
Retinyl palmitate
As a retinoid, this ingredient may increase sun sensitivity when applied and worn in direct sunlight.
Cyclic silicones
Including cyclotetrasiloxane (D4), cyclopentasiloxane (D5), cyclohexasiloxane (D6), and cyclomethicone. Data indicates some of these may have reproductive and developmental toxicity.
Shellac
Styrenes
Including bromostyrene, DEA-styrene/acrylates/DVP copolymer, sodium styrene/divinylbenzene copolymer, styrene oxide, and styrene.
Sulfates
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES).
Talc
Allowed only with an asbestos-free statement and/or test data.
Toluene
Triclosan and triclocarban
Antibacterials used in personal care and home cleaning products. They are persistent in the environment and may be associated with hormone disruption.
Triphenyl phosphate (TPHP)
Xylenes

FRAGRANCE RESTRICTIONS

Mazi prefers natural fragrances.

In addition to the substances above, the following are prohibited from any fragrance formulation in our products.

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP)
Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP)
Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)
Diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP)
Diisononyl phthalate (DINP)
Di-n-hexyl phthalate (DNHP)

COLOURING RESTRICTIONS

Minimal, non-irritating colour only.

To create a visually enjoyable experience, we sometimes formulate with a minimum amount of non-irritating colouring agents.

Synthetic iron oxides are man-made but produced from natural ores and minerals, and are 100% safe to use in cosmetic formulations.
